Lisboa Card for public transportation in Lisbon

The Lisboa Card as a Public Transport Ticket

The Lisboa Card serves as a ticket for all public transport in the city (except Tejo ferries and local buses in Sintra/Cascais). This includes metro, buses, trams (including the famous line 28E), funiculars, and the Santa Justa elevator. Even the suburban trains to Sintra and Cascais as well as the train across the Tejo bridge to Pragal (Almada) are included. It's available as a 24h, 48h, or 72h pass and is only activated upon first use; from that point, the selected time period runs.

The historic Tram 28 is an icon of Lisbon. With the Lisboa Card, you can ride this tram for free too.

Practical Usage

  1. Pick up the card: Collect your Lisboa Card at the airport or a tourist office and write your name and start date/time on the back.
  2. Validation & travel: Hold the card to the reader on every journey (at metro turnstiles, when boarding buses and trams). The first validation activates the card and starts the validity period.
  3. Inspection: During a ticket inspection, simply show your valid Lisboa Card (possibly with ID for identification).

Timetables and Public Transport App

The metro runs approximately from 6:30 AM to 1:00 AM. Most bus and tram lines operate from about 5:00 AM-midnight (main lines longer). At night, night buses run hourly on the most important routes. There are also continuous connections on weekends, though at longer intervals.

Download the official Carris app (Android / iOS) for current information - it offers route planning, live departure times, and network maps.

Important Lines for Tourists

  • From airport & train stations to the center: The red metro line runs directly from the airport to downtown. The train stations Oriente, Santa Apolónia, and Sete Rios also have metro connections. From Rossio station, the suburban train goes to Sintra, and from Cais do Sodré the train goes to Cascais - both free with the card.
  • Reaching attractions: Explore the old town (with Castelo) using tram 28E. To reach Belém (Torre de Belém, Jerónimos Monastery), take the modern tram 15E. Bus 728 offers a scenic route along the Tejo (Parque das Nações - Belém).
  • Central transfer points: Baixa-Chiado, Marquês de Pombal, and Cais do Sodré are important hubs - lines intersect here, making navigation easier.
